Classical architectural forms, like columns, were used often in George Washington’s designs for Mount Vernon. The fluted column base on this round dining table echoes the fluted pilasters that frame the Palladian doorways in the west parlor, which Washington at one time considered “the best place in my House.” The wood paneling and carved details, painted a striking Prussian blue, created a beautiful and comfortable space for Washington and his family to receive guests, read, and play games.
